This was the defining moment of “The Greatest Generation”. A day never to be forgotten. It unified and mobilized our nation as never before.
When the movie Pearl Harbor came out in 2001, I took my Dad to see it. There is a scene in the film that shows crew members trapped below decks. You only see their arms reaching out as their ship sinks. This was 60 years after the fact, but his eyes filled with tears and he had to leave the theatre.
He was a World War II veteran of the Coast Guard. He never spoke about his time in the service. Growing up, I assumed that the Coast Guard was only responsible for coastal patrols. After he died, I found a stash of pictures he had taken during the war. They showed scenes of destruction in both Europe and the Pacific. I had no idea.
Let’s take a moment today to remember those who served 75 years ago and to give thanks for those who serve today. We owe them the freedoms we often take for granted.
Let us never forget the sacrifices made by others to ensure our safety and freedom.
